If you handle your prints carefully, or keep them framed or in albums, you'll be more than happy with the 475. But with waterproof output available from so many other printers, like the Epson PictureMate, it's too big an oversight to ignore. In truth, the 475 has so many strengths that if it weren't for the lack of water resistance for the photos, it would be a runaway pick for Editors' Choice. But HP doesn't have an equivalent pack for 5-by-7s, and the company doesn't quote a cost for a 5-by-7 print. With HP's $47.99 consumables pack, which has enough paper and ink for 200 4-by-6 photos, the cost is just 24 cents each. We saw times of 2:30 to 2:51 whether printing from the camera, memory card, or internal hard drive.Ĭost per print is another plus, at least for 4-by-6 output. Printing the same files at 5 by 7 took only a little longer. Printing from a Canon PowerShot S60 camera, a CompactFlash card, or the internal hard drive was a little slower, at 1:55 to 2:19, depending on the photo. Print speed is well within the typical range for 4-by-6 output, averaging 1 minute 43 seconds for our standard test photos printed from a computer and 1:25 to 1:53 for a variety of other photos, both with and without borders. Most dedicated photo printers, such as the ink jet–based Epson PictureMate and Epson PictureMate Deluxe Viewer Edition, simply don't have this problem. And a drop of water will leave a water stain. Even a little water on your hand-from picking up a glass of iced coffee with condensation on it, for example-will easily smudge a photo. As with HP's other portable printers, however, the 475's Achilles' heel is that the output is neither waterproof nor water-resistant. Output was true photo quality, earning a solidly excellent rating. It offers a reasonably straightforward menu system for transferring files, viewing photos on TV, and cropping and editing pictures before printing. The 475 also offers a full array of more common features, including the ability to print from a computer, from a PictBridge camera or memory card, or by way of an optional Bluetooth adapter ($59). You can view them on TV whenever you like-it's much like pulling out an album to thumb through, with the added touch of being able to print copies of photos for friends and relatives on the spot. But thanks to the hard drive, you can store hundreds of your favorite photos, individually or as part of predefined slide sets. Like most printers that connect to a TV, the 475 lets you view the photos on the TV as a slide show. The hard drive also adds new depth to the TV connection feature. If you run out of room on your camera's memory card while on the go, you can move the files to the hard drive, delete them from the card after transfer, and get back to taking pictures. The 1.5GB internal hard drive is a particularly nice touch. And the optional 8-ounce rechargeable battery ($79), good for 70 pictures on a charge, means you can print photos without needing an outlet. It even includes a handle on the printer itself-as well as a padded carrying case option ($35)-to make it easy to take with you. At 4.8 by 9.8 by 4.5 inches (HWD) and weighing only 3.3 pounds, the 475 is highly portable. One of the welcome extras with 4-by-6 printers is portability. Even better, HP has managed to build a printer for bigger photos than usual without making the printer itself all that big. You'll also find premium extras, most notably an internal hard disk and the ability to print at up to 5 by 7 inches and panoramas at 4 by 12 inches. The ink jet–based HP Photosmart 475 GoGo Photo Printer ($279 direct) has the usual convenience features, including a 2.5-inch color LCD for previewing photos.
